Single use items like straws, cups, and cutlery are being labeled as ‘compostable’ — but the truth is a bit more complicated.
Single-use items that are called ‘compostable’ aren’t necessarily good for the environment. So is compostable plastic a lie?
Some of these products can actually be toxic. Some have a higher environmental impact than the non-compostable equivalent. And compostable plastic can’t be recycled.
You can’t say that all compostable packaging is good OR bad. But using them could create a whole new host of problems without solving the initial problem of ocean plastic pollution.
